Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated that one third of the money the Romanian state spends to function comes from loans.
He argues that there is a need for „a national effort,” because „otherwise, all discussions related to major reforms that will correct these things cannot be done.”
"Think that, in order to function, for every three lei we spend to operate, one lei is borrowed. And so, I am very reserved to scatter the money that I don't have, that I know I need to borrow, or to put an additional burden on the person who works in Romania, who goes to the factory from morning till night, works hard, and for whom I impose some additional taxes," declared Ilie Bolojan on Monday evening on TVR 1.
He believes that it is much fairer for politicians to tell Romanians "not what they like to hear, but the truth."
"Let's tell them the things that can be done, under what conditions they can be done, and what needs to be done in the near future, so that we can get through this difficult period. But this requires a national effort that everyone must make, because otherwise all discussions related to major reforms that will correct these things, without affecting anyone, cannot be done. (...)
Every amount of money saved, every sum of money that we do not spend because we no longer have where to spend it, is, in my opinion, generally speaking, an act of responsibility towards the people from whom we collect taxes and fees, and we should take care of their money. This is a generally valid approach and I will not change it whether I am a prime minister or simply a member of parliament or a regular citizen," added Ilie Bolojan.
The Prime Minister also stated that all the measures proposed by the Government he leads were agreed upon by the parties in the governing coalition.
"The fact that there were things agreed upon by common consent was also evidenced by yesterday's vote (Sunday - ed.) in Parliament," during the debate on the censure motions, the Prime Minister argues.
The joint plenary session of Parliament debated and voted on Sunday on the four censure motions filed by AUR, S.O.S Romania, and POT against the Government of Ilie Bolojan. After seven hours of speeches, all four motions were rejected in the vote, managing to gather just over 100 votes.
