In a surprising stance, Kelemen Hunor suggests that he does not agree with Viktor Orban’s support for George Simion.
The President of UDMR announces that the visit of the AUR leader to the Cotroceni Palace would be a catastrophe for the Hungarian minority in Romania.
"Simion is neither Christian nor sovereignist. He is anti-Hungarian," said Kelemen Hunor in a post on his Facebook page on Saturday, May 10.
"We will not forget that he danced on the graves of our grandparents in Uzvölgy (Valea Uzului) and we will not forget that through hundreds of trials he attacked our mother tongue, flags, and symbols. Let's stop Simion on May 18! Let's vote for Nicușor Dan!" the UDMR leader further announced in his video message.
Prior to this, Kelemen Hunor stated that, between George Simion and Nicușor Dan, "common sense dictates whom we should choose."
Through his statement, Kelemen Hunor indirectly criticized the position of Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary, who yesterday expressed support for Simion, stating: "it is time for a Europe of nations, a Christian Europe," specifying that he agrees with the critical stance towards the European Union taken by the AUR leader.
This is the first time that the leadership of UDMR publicly opposes Viktor Orban since his return to power in 2010.
This can also be explained by the fact that the influence of the Hungarian Prime Minister has significantly diminished, with FIDESZ, Orban's governing party, ranking second in polls and possibly facing defeat in next year's elections.
