Billionaire Elon Musk, a very close advisor to Donald Trump, publicly supports the withdrawal of the US from NATO and the UN.
„I agree,” he said in response to a post by right-wing political commentator Gunher Eagleman, who wrote that „it is time” for the US to leave NATO and the UN.
The message comes after several Republican lawmakers introduced a bill to withdraw the US from the UN, arguing that the organization does not align with the Trump administration’s „America First” agenda.
The United States was among several countries, including Russia, Belarus, Israel, and Hungary, that voted against a UN resolution at the end of February condemning Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Both NATO and the UN were founded to promote diplomacy and cooperation among nations, as well as to prevent another global war.
Musk currently heads the so-called US Department of Government Efficiency, which has significantly reduced government spending, including life-saving foreign aid.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized other NATO countries for their lack of contributions to the military alliance and has called for a 5% of GDP spending target for all members.
In December, Donald Trump stated that he would "absolutely" consider the possibility of the US leaving NATO if allies do not "pay their bills."
"If they pay their bills and if I feel like they're treating us fairly, the answer is: absolutely, I'd stay in NATO," Trump said, before answering "absolutely" to the question of whether he would consider leaving the Alliance otherwise.
Kiev sees NATO membership as a crucial guarantee against future Russian aggression, but Trump said in February that Ukraine "can forget" about joining the alliance, suggesting that his offer was a trigger for war.
