The US Open has ended, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, and now we know a new WTA world leader, Elena Rybakina, who is already qualified for the WTA Tour Finals at the end of the year.
The 27-year-old Kazakh athlete has mathematically secured her spot at the Tournament of Champions, where our own athlete Sorana Cîrstea can still qualify.
This year, the tournament will take place in Indian Wells, with the top eight players of the season participating. Rybakina will try to defend her title won last year in Riyadh.
Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Mirra Andreeva are also close to qualifying for this prestigious tournament, with the big battle set for the last 3 qualifying spots up for grabs.
Elina Svitolina, Karolina Muchova, and Linda Noskova are currently in the LIVE rankings in positions 6, 7, and 8, but Marta Kostyuk and Iga Swiatek also have a good chance of making it to California, sitting in 9th and 10th place.
For Sorana Cîrstea to reach IW, she needs to earn more points in the coming weeks. She is currently in 11th place in the WTA Race, so she has real mathematical chances for qualification. Cîrstea is nearly 2,000 points behind Linda Noskova, who holds 8th place, making the journey challenging. Additionally, Linda Noskova benefits from a favorable regulation loophole, which states that a player who wins a Grand Slam tournament qualifies for the end-of-season competition if they finish the year in the top 20, and the Czech won Wimbledon and will surely end the year in the top 20 WTA.
Therefore, Sorana may need to climb up to 7th place in the WTA Race, which can only be achievable if she earns many points in the upcoming tournaments starting soon in Asia.
