A major surprise took place in the women’s draw at Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year 2024, held in Paris.
On the first day of the French Open, at the Philippe Chatrier complex, in only the second match concluded of the day and the entire tournament, Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic, ranked 42nd in the WTA, decisively defeated Veronica Kudermetova from Russia, 31st in the world, seeded 29th in France. The score was 6-2, 6-4, after an hour and 41 minutes of play.
Prior to this encounter, the head-to-head score was 3-1 in favor of the Russian, who had last won in Rome a year ago with a double 6-2 victory.
In the second round, Bouzkova will face the winner between Maneiro (Spain) and Fett (Croatia).
Also on Sunday, in the first match concluded of the day, Vekic defeated Tsurenko from Ukraine, with a score of 6-5 in the first set, followed by Lesia's retirement due to medical issues.
On the same day, Jaqueline Cristian will also play at the French Open in the first round against Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia, after 14:30, on the Suzanne Lenglen court.
