President Nicușor Dan designated Siegfried Mureșan as Prime Minister on Thursday, following the consultations at Cotroceni Palace.
PNL MEP is one of the Romanian politicians with significant experience in European institutions, holding leadership positions in the European People’s Party and the EPP group in the European Parliament.
Siegfried Mureșan was born on September 20, 1981, in Hunedoara. He graduated from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, Faculty of Management, with studies in German, and pursued a master's degree in economics and management at Humboldt University in Berlin.
Worked in Germany and Brussels
Prior to joining the European Parliament, Mureșan worked in Germany, where, between 2006 and 2009, he served as an advisor to the President of the Committee for European Affairs in the Bundestag.
Later, he moved to Brussels and worked within the structures of the European People's Party, holding positions as an advisor on economic and social issues.
In 2014, he became a Member of the European Parliament, initially elected on the lists of the People's Movement Party. He later joined PNL. He was re-elected in 2019 and 2024 and is currently serving his third term in the European Parliament.
EU Budget and PNRR among his main areas
In the European Parliament, Siegfried Mureșan has focused particularly on economic and budgetary areas. He is a member of the Budgets Committee and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs.
He has been involved in negotiations on the budgets of the European Union and in drafting the legislation that underpinned the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism and the REPowerEU component.
He has also served as the Chief Negotiator of the European Parliament for the EU budget.
In the leadership of the EPP and PNL
Siegfried Mureșan holds the position of Vice President of the European People's Party and is Vice President of the EPP group in the European Parliament.
In 2026, he was also elected to the leadership of PNL, in the team led by Ilie Bolojan.
His proposal for the position of Prime Minister was supported by PNL, USR, and UDMR. Following Thursday's consultations, Nicușor Dan decided to designate him to form the Government.
"Romania needs a government. We don't have a defined majority. I chose to propose for the position of Prime Minister the person with the most votes: Siegfried Mureșan," the President stated.
Mureșan now needs to form the Government and obtain the vote of confidence from Parliament, at a time when there is still no clear parliamentary majority.
