The leader of AUR, George Simion, and the leader of POT, Anamaria Gavrilă, have announced that they are submitting their candidacies for the Presidency.
But after the validation of the candidacies, only one will remain in the race, and the other will withdraw. The announcement was made after the meeting the two had with Călin Georgescu.
AUR and POT are thus securing their presence in the electoral race, having a backup alternative in case of any legal or image-related blockages.
This strategy comes in the context where the candidacy of Călin Georgescu was rejected by the Constitutional Court, and the nationalist leaders had to find a last-minute solution.
"Moving forward"
George Simion posted a video on his Facebook account in which he appears alongside Ana Maria Gavrilă, the POT leader, announcing the candidacies.
The video recording is accompanied by the message: "The plan is set, we are moving forward, get involved so we can collect the signatures in record time," wrote George Simion on Facebook.
"After we, the presidents of the two sovereignist parties, along with Mr. Călin Georgescu, met, we can tell you what the plan is. All the pressure is on returning to the second round. We, as young people, will continue this sovereignist movement with the approval of Mr. Călin Georgescu and will take the necessary steps forward," said George Simion.
In the video posted by George Simion on his Facebook account, the POT president, Anamaria Gavrilă, also announced her candidacy for the presidential elections.
The president of AUR, George Simion, declared on Tuesday evening that he will not run in the presidential elections in May.
He added that he will continue to do "what Mr. Călin Georgescu says" and emphasized that, on the legislative front, starting Wednesday morning, the sovereignist opposition parties will go on parliamentary strike.
