European Parliament Elections 2024: Europe's Powers Hit by Election Results. Opposing Reactions in France and Germany

European Parliament Elections 2024: Europe's Powers Hit by Election Results. Opposing Reactions in France and Germany

Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz react differently to the defeats suffered by their parties in the European elections. While the French president announced the dissolution of the National Assembly and called for early elections, the German chancellor did not even consider such an option.

In France, a new electoral campaign for the legislative elections is starting, announced by Macron after the historic victory of the far right in the European elections on Sunday, a poker game that plunges the country into deep political confusion, commented AFP, cited by Agerpres.

Three weeks of electoral turmoil open ahead of the first round, which will take place on June 30, followed by a second round on July 7, just before the Olympic Games in Paris (July 26 – August 11).

### Macron makes an extremely risky bet

Faced with the rise of nationalists, the head of state explained that he wants „to give back to the French the choice of our parliamentary future through voting,” announcing the dissolution of the National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament.

„I have confidence in the ability of the French people to make the fairest choice for themselves and for future generations. My only ambition is to be useful to our beloved country, ” said Macron in a message posted on social media X on Monday.

It is something completely unexpected and at the same time a „risky bet,” at a time when „there is a very strong desire on the part of the French to sanction the President of the Republic,” highlighted polling expert Celine Bracq, general director of the Odoxa institute.

**The sanction vote has just broken records. The National Assembly list (RN, far right), led by Jordan Bardella, triumphed with 32% of the votes in the European elections, far ahead of Macronist candidate Valerie Hayer (14.5%) and the socialist list of Raphael Glucksmann (14%).**

With the dissolution of the Legislature, Emmanuel Macron is making „an extremely risky bet,” even though „there will certainly be very different voting behaviors” between the legislative and European elections, believes historian Jean Garrigues.

„These elections will confront the French with a fait accompli: do they want an RN government?” he explained.

RN is „ready to exercise power,” said far-right leader Marine Le Pen on Sunday, ahead of an executive board meeting with Jordan Bardella, in a format that mimics a cabinet meeting.

Emmanuel Macron gathered the government on Sunday evening. The head of state is set to travel to the center of the country on Monday to participate in a series of ceremonies, but also promised to speak this week to assert the „orientation” he considers „right for the nation.”

### Scholz rules out early legislative elections

However, in Germany, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rules out holding early legislative elections, as in France, following a stinging defeat of his government in the European elections, a spokesman quoted by AFP announced.

The idea of early elections, demanded by the far right and conservative voices, was not considered „at any moment, not for a second,” specified Steffen Hebestreit, despite a „somewhat unsatisfactory” result for the three parties within the government coalition between the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of the Chancellor, the Greens, and the Free Democratic Party (FDP).

„The date of the regular elections is set for the fall of 2025. That is what we plan to do,” added the spokesman, quoted by News.ro.

He emphasized the major differences between the French system, where the president plays a prominent role, and the German one, where the entire national executive power is in the hands of the chancellor and his party.

The three parties in the coalition formed at the end of 2021 obtained less than a third of the votes in Sunday’s European elections and lost ground, especially the Greens, according to still provisional results.

**The big winner of the European elections is the conservative camp, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) in Bavaria with which it is allied, with a score of 30%, followed by the Alternative for Germany (AfD, far right) with a score of 15.9%.**

### The big winner calls for elections as soon as possible

On Monday, the CSU leader called for elections to be organized „as soon as possible” and „a new start for our country.”

„The Scholz government no longer has any support from the population,” said Markus Söder on NTV.

Scholz „has only one task left to fulfill,” also appreciated AfD co-chair Alice Weidel, „to pave the way for new elections, instead of governing for another year against the vast majority of the population.”

Since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949, early elections have taken place three times following a vote of no confidence in the Bundestag, during the terms of Social Democrat Willy Brandt (1972), conservative Helmut Kohl (1982), and Social Democrat Gerhard Schröder in 2005.
