Former Romanian President has been indicted again for crimes against humanity. Prosecutors went to Ion Iliescu's home

A team of investigators from the General Prosecutor’s Office went to Ion Iliescu’s residence on Friday morning to inform the former Romanian president that he has been indicted again for crimes against humanity in the case of the June 1990 Mineriad.

The team consisted of the prosecutor (a woman) handling the case, a police officer, and another woman. They spent only ten minutes in the villa where Iliescu lives.

The information was provided at the former head of state’s residence, in the presence of his lawyer, considering his advanced age and poor health condition, as conveyed by the Public Ministry.

"In the case known generically as the 'Mineriad of June 13-15, 1990,' military prosecutors from the Military Prosecution Section ordered, on 04/19/2024, the continuation of the criminal investigation against Ion Iliescu, who at the time of the events was the president of the Provisional Council of National Unity and the elected president of Romania, for alleged crimes against humanity," added the General Prosecutor's Office.

A day earlier, the General Prosecutor's Office announced the continuation of the criminal investigation in the Mineriad Case against former officials Petre Roman, Gelu Voican Voiculescu, Virgil Măgureanu, Adrian Sârbu, Miron Cosma, and two generals.

Their actions resulted in the shooting deaths of 4 individuals, two rapes, 1,315 injured persons, and 1,214 individuals illegally deprived of their freedom for political reasons, as alleged by the prosecutors.

Prosecutors are required to reconstruct the investigation in this case after the evidence gathered before was annulled in court.

Initially, in June 2017, former President Ion Iliescu was indicted for crimes against humanity, along with former Prime Minister Petre Roman and former Romanian Information Service Director Virgil Măgureanu. However, in December 2020, the High Court of Cassation and Justice decided to return the case to the Military Prosecution, requesting a complete reinvestigation from scratch, 30 years after the events.

At that time, the judges ruled to annul all evidence gathered by the prosecutors.
