Four moose brought to Vânători Neamț Natural Park this spring are adapting better and better to the new habitat, announced the National Forestry Administration – Romsilva. The animals are part of a project aiming to reintroduce the moose into Romania’s fauna after an absence of over two centuries.
Romsilva posted on its Facebook page on Tuesday images of the four specimens – one male and three females – and stated that they have acclimated well three months after their arrival in the country.
The first specimens were brought in April
The four moose come from specialized centers in Germany, France, and Switzerland and arrived at the end of April in Vânători Neamț Natural Park, managed by Romsilva.
According to the administration, the animals were carefully selected to have the best chances of acclimatization in the new area. Upon arrival, they were kept in quarantine for 30 days under the supervision of specialists.
The first stage of a reintroduction project
Romsilva specifies that bringing these four specimens represents the first stage of a project to reintroduce the moose into Romania's fauna.
The species disappeared from the country over 200 years ago, and the project aims to gradually rebuild a viable population in the natural environment.
