Călin Georgescu: Trump knows what needs to be done. He will help with the fall of neocolonial regimes

The General Prosecutor’s Office has changed the procedural status of Călin Georgescu from suspect to defendant in a case where he is being investigated for statements with Legionary content.

The measure was taken on Friday, in the context of an extended criminal investigation, after the former presidential candidate quoted a passage from Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, a former Legionary leader, live on a TV station.

Judicial sources cited by Agerpres specified that Georgescu refused to provide statements to the prosecutors.

Upon leaving the General Prosecutor's Office, however, he delivered a new public message with conspiracy tones and praises for the American president:

"I remain convinced and steadfast that America and President Trump - a great leader - know what needs to be done and will soon help in the downfall of neocolonial regimes."

He added that the "colonial" regime in Romania, as well as in other European countries, will collapse on its own.

"The lie will burn by itself (...). I trust the Romanian people, I see them, I feel them, I feel all of you. (...) This colonial regime, both in Romania and in many other countries, especially in Europe, will fall on its own. It's like in the past when the fight was against a colonial or neocolonial regime and when neoliberal structures practically took over people's lives."

Under criminal investigation for incitement and extremist propaganda

Georgescu has been under judicial control since February 26, being investigated for six offenses, including incitement to actions against the constitutional order, after allegedly proposing a plan to destabilize Romania with the help of a network of mercenaries led by Horațiu Potra.

The plan was set in motion following a decision of the Constitutional Court in December 2024, which annulled the results of the first round of the presidential elections.

Among the prohibitions imposed on Georgescu are:

      • the prohibition to leave the country without the authorities' approval,
      • the prohibition to post online content with Legionary, fascist, antisemitic, racist, or xenophobic characteristics.

On March 9, 2025, the Central Electoral Bureau invalidated his candidacy for the presidential elections, based on the Constitutional Court's decision to cancel the first-round election results. Previously, in May 2025, the General Prosecutor's Office announced the extension of the criminal investigation against him after he publicly repeated a phrase attributed to Codreanu, the leader of the Legionary Movement.
