President Nicușor Dan and the leaders of PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR have reached an agreement for a new government rotation.

Thus, the liberal Ilie Bolojan is set to be designated as prime minister on Wednesday and lead the government until 2027, when PSD is expected to return to Victoria Palace, a year before the local and parliamentary elections, according to political sources for News.ro.

Ilie Bolojan has obtained a "veto right" in determining the composition of the new government. When it comes to dividing the roles, the parties have the following requests:

  • PSD aims for 7 ministries, including Transport and Justice.
  • PNL will have 4 portfolios. The Liberals target Finance, Internal Affairs, and Regional Development.
  • USR will receive 3 ministries.
  • UDMR will receive 2 portfolios.

PSD leaders will meet tonight to vote on joining the government and have informed President Nicușor Dan that the only scenario in which they would vote for a government led by Ilie Bolojan would be a new government rotation, according to the sources cited.

Ilie Bolojan has obtained a "veto right" for the formation of the new government and will be able to reject a minister proposed by PSD or the other parties in the governing coalition, according to the sources cited.

UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor stated on Monday that the government rotation scenario is inevitable, whether it is included in a written agreement between the parties participating in the government or not.

According to him, looking at the budget figures, public debt, and the measures to be taken, it will be difficult for a prime minister to lead the government for 3 and a half years.

"Everyone has very high expectations that Ilie Bolojan is coming. But PSD, which is in first place after the elections half a year ago, says it needs a perspective, that it is still the leading party and from here things got a bit tangled: who starts, what perspective... But if you don't have a goal, you don't have courage, then people will say: 'Why did we choose these if they don't want to, if they lack courage?' and there will be a rotation anyway.

Whether we write it down or not, I believe that, at this moment, looking at the budget figures, public debt, and what we need to do, it will be difficult for a prime minister to lead the government for 3 and a half years," stated the UDMR leader on Digi24.
