Extremist candidate in the presidential elections, George Simion, claims that „there were Russian cyber attacks in Romania during the elections.”
However, he says that these attacks were not in favor of either Călin Georgescu or any other electoral competitor, but the Russians launched these attacks „just to show their power.”
"I could say, considering that it has created a strong division, there were, you should know that there were Russian attacks, I also noted here... There were Russian cyber attacks in Romania during the elections, they were not in favor of Mr. Călin Georgescu or any electoral competitor, they did it just to show their power," stated George Simion in an interview with Digi24.
He promised that if elected president, he would declassify the discussions from the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) meeting where there was talk about the influence of foreign state and non-state actors on Romania's elections.
"When I become president, I promise to declassify all documents related to the annulment of the elections and the transcript of the CSAT meeting, because, you see, I am interested and I am convinced that there are many viewers of Digi24 who are interested to know, hey, were there Russians, were there not Russians.
The first time I said it, it's a state actor. What state actor is Russia (...) and it's not China, for example, because, in the end, TikTok is Chinese. There is much to discuss," said Simion.
The Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round of the presidential elections in November 2024, following the declassification of secret service documents highlighting a probable Russian electoral interference and effective TikTok campaigns on a large scale.
TikTok declared in March 2025 that it had removed over 27,000 fake accounts promoting the AUR party. Additionally, TikTok has hired more content moderators and created a task force for the Romanian elections focused on "covert influence campaigns and advertising integrity" ahead of the presidential elections in May 2025.
