Employees of the High Court of Cassation and Justice (Romania’s top court) who work with monitor equipment will receive money to buy prescription glasses or contact lenses, based on an eye doctor’s prescription.
The maximum amounts granted are 500 lei for frames, and 2,500 lei for lenses, but consultations and labor necessary for making the glasses will also be reimbursed.
The decision comes after a rulling by the Court of Justice of the European Union, whereby employers are required to provide vision glasses to employees working in front of a monitor.
Following this decision from December 2022, last year Judge Daniela Stăncioi sued the state to reimburse her glasses and won the case. Daniela Stăncoi is a judge at the Bucharest Court of Appeal, currently detached as a spokesperson for the Superior Council of Magistracy.
So now the supreme court has decided to reimburse glasses to prevent litigious situations and settle ongoing court cases.
Here are the conditions for reimbursing glasses, as decided by the High Court of Cassation and Justice:
- Reimbursement for changing lenses necessary for visual correction is made when the initial diagnosis changes.
- If the diagnosis remains unchanged, reimbursement for changing prescription glasses is done once every 2 years.
- If the invoice amount is lower than the specified limit, the invoice amount is reimbursed.
- If the invoice amount exceeds the set limit, the maximum amount is reimbursed.
- The prevention and protection department in the field of occupational safety and health keeps a record of employees benefiting from the reimbursement of special correction devices to ensure compliance with the conditions and deadlines for replacement.
