Approximately 15 candidates per seat are competing in the European Parliament elections that will take place in Romania on Sunday. Our country will send 33 representatives to the European Parliament.
For the European Parliament elections, 494 candidates have entered the electoral race, of which 167 are women (33.81% of the total).
12 political parties and electoral alliances, along with four independent candidates, will participate in the European parliamentary election, the ballot order being as follows:
- Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania
- Electoral Alliance PSD PNL
- Renew the European Project Party of Romania
- AUR Alliance
- Social Liberal Humanist Party
- United Right Alliance USR - PMP - Force of the Right
- Socialist Romania
- Greater Romania Party
- Patriots Party
- Right Alternative Party
- S.O.S. Romania Party
- United Diaspora Party
Additionally, the independent candidates who will participate in the elections are as follows:
- Paula-Marinela Pîrvănescu
- Vlad-Dan Gheorghe
- Nicolae-Bogdănel Ştefănuţă
- Dumitru-Silvestru Şoşoacă - placed under judicial control this week on charges of forgery and false statements in the case of falsifying signatures for his candidacy for the European Parliament
Current MEPs and those seeking a new mandate
Over the past five years, Romania has been represented in the European Parliament by the following MEPs: Carmen Avram (PSD), Traian Băsescu (PMP), Dragoş Benea (PSD), Vasile Blaga (PNL), Rareş Bogdan (PNL), Vlad Botoş (USR), Daniel Buda (PNL), Cristian Buşoi (PNL), Dacian Cioloş (REPER), Tudor Ciuhodaru (AUR), Corina Creţu (Pro România), Gheorghe Falcă (PNL), Vlad Gheorghe (independent), Maria Grapini (PSD), Mircea Hava (PNL), Claudiu Manda (PSD), Marian Jean Marinescu (PNL), Alin Mituţă (REPER), Dan Motreanu (PNL), Siegfried Mureşan (PNL), Victor Negrescu (PSD), Dan Nica (PSD), Vlad Nistor (PNL), Dragoş Pâslaru (REPER), Rovana Plumb (PSD), Nicolae Ştefănuţă (independent), Ramona Strugariu (REPER), Cristian Terheş (PNCR), Eugen Tomac (PMP), Dragoş Tudorache (REPER), Mihai Tudose (PSD), Lorant Vincze (UDMR), and Iuliu Winkler (UDMR).
Out of these, 22 MEPs are running again in Sunday's elections.
Not included in the lists for this election are Carmen Avram, Traian Băsescu, Vasile Blaga, Cristian Buşoi, Tudor Ciuhodaru, Corina Creţu, Marian Jean Marinescu, Alin Mituţă, Vlad Nistor, Rovana Plumb, and Dragoş Tudorache.
Among the new names on this year's European Parliament lists are: actor and director Florin Călinescu, PSD senator Gabriela Firea, who is also the Social Democrats' candidate for the position of Bucharest Mayor, PSD senator Vasile Dîncu, AUR National Council President Claudiu Târziu, lawyer Gheorghe Piperea, USR deputy from Sibiu Dan Barna, former Health Minister Vlad Voiculescu, Forța Dreptei deputy Violeta Alexandru, former Minister of Labor in the Orban Government, senator Lorand Turos, Dorel Onaca - Executive President of PRM, Diana Iovanovici-Şoşoacă - President of S.O.S. Romania, and Luis Vicenţiu Lazarus, Mugur Ciuvică, and former Minister of Education Liviu-Marian Pop.
As the European Parliament elections take place in Romania on the same day as the local elections, many of the candidates on the EP lists are also running for mayor or local council positions.
The elections for the European Parliament are held from Thursday to Sunday in all EU member states, with a total of 720 representatives to be elected for the next five years.
