This morning we found out that a private plane owned by Google and often used by the executives of the American IT giant has landed in Bucharest.
Later on, there were explanations from the Romanian Government, that signed a memorandum of understanding with Google’s cloud division, for expertise regarding several projects related to digitizing public services, including the implementation of AI technologies.
The press release does not provide specific details about the collaboration, but we know that Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu had a meeting with Google representatives and participated in the signing of this memorandum, in the context of the projects that our country will develop in digital infrastructure, innovation, and research.
The memorandum was signed on behalf of the Government by the Minister of Digitalization, Bogdan Ivan.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Google's expertise and contribution are essential to implementing efficient and secure public services for Romanians.
"We have ambitious projects for the reform of public administration, which involve the use of modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, improving operational efficiency, enhancing digital security, promoting innovation in the public sector, and adopting cloud technology.
We are advancing in terms of the digital transformation of public services, aligning with the modernization of the tax system to detect fraud and increase revenue, and each day shows us how important it is to enhance cyber resilience. We have also undertaken the operationalization of the government cloud.
Google's expertise and contribution are essential to implementing efficient and secure public services for Romanians," said Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, quoted in a government press release.
The Prime Minister highlighted that Romania is an attractive market for technology investors, both due to major projects in data centers and cloud services and because of highly trained professionals and advanced legislation.
"It was an honor to meet Marcel Ciolacu, Prime Minister of Romania, and Minister of Digitalization, Bogdan Ivan, to discuss accelerating digital transformation for public services in Romania and the opportunities for implementing artificial intelligence," said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, also quoted in the government's press release.
"Google Cloud is dedicated to increasing the adoption of cloud technologies and facilitating innovative digital public services, in line with Romania's digital transformation goals and the European Digital Decade targets for 2030," the official stated.
Google representatives also reaffirmed their support to enhance the cyber resilience of government structures through sharing best practices, strengthening basic and advanced digital skills, and adopting cloud computing technologies.
This collaboration aims to:
