Romanian President Klaus Iohannis was also in the Bucegi Mountains shortly before a young tourist was killed by a bear.
Asked about this tragic case, Klaus Iohannis said that he believes „things have gone too far.”
"I am very worried and shocked by the event. Shocked. On Saturday, I was on a trail in the Bucegi Mountains and shortly after, I find out that this misfortune happened very close to where I was,"
"I feel very sorry for the person who was a victim there, for their family, but I feel very sorry for Romania as well, because we have incredible natural resources and we don't really know how to manage them properly."
"The issue with bears is not new at all, and the political class has reacted each time to these unfortunate incidents only superficially. It's a big emotion, a government meeting is convened, discussions take place in Parliament, and then we move on," Iohannis stated.
The President also said that if Romania wants a healthy tourism industry, "we must understand that we should not allow people to be killed by animals."
"Just as I don't believe animals should be killed just for fun, a middle ground must be found, and I hope that this time those responsible find a real solution. In the meantime, it is evident that we have too many bears, too many incidents where people are injured or even killed by bears, and we cannot continue like this."
"I am neither a hunter nor a specialist in the field, but we have enough and it is time to come up with a legislative solution that respects all European standards but also respects human life. We cannot protect animals at the expense of humans," Iohannis added.
A bear attacked and killed a woman on the Jepii Mici trail. When found, the animal was aggressive and was shot.
