Greenpeace protest at the Neptun Deep drilling platform in the Black Sea

A Greenpeace pilot-activist carried out a peaceful protest on Wednesday in the port of Constanța Sud – Agigea, Romania, near the Transocean Barents platform, the offshore drilling unit contracted for the Neptun Deep project.

He flew with an electric paramotor near the platform displaying a banner with the message: „STOP FOSSIL GAS.”

The action took place following the publication of a new analysis prepared for Greenpeace Romania, which estimates that approximately 46,000 people globally could die prematurely by the end of the century due to extreme temperatures caused by the total greenhouse gas emissions generated by the Neptun Deep project.

"The future of our children will be uncertain and devoid of hope as long as such platforms continue to drill for fossil fuels. The figures in the analysis are alarming and cannot be ignored. By supporting the Neptun Deep project, authorities are becoming complicit in an ongoing crime.

Instead of prioritizing energy efficiency measures and green solutions, authorities continue to nail our coffins shut. Romania and Europe must now put an end to new investments in fossil projects," said Vlad Cătună, campaign coordinator at Greenpeace Romania.

The analysis, published and conducted by Prof. Dr. Wim Thiery from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, also suggests that over 1.2 million children born between 2010 and 2020 will experience an additional heatwave throughout their lives due to the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the Neptun Deep project.

The environmental organization highlights the urgent need to no longer invest in an energy system that harms the health, safety, and future of people and the Black Sea, and calls for accelerating the transition to renewable solutions.

In November 2024, Greenpeace Romania won in court the lawsuit whereby the Bucharest Tribunal obliges the Dobrogea Litoral Water Basin Administration and the Grigore Antipa Institute to disclose the ecotoxicity studies that formed the basis of the Integrated Environmental Report for the Neptun Deep project.

In December 2024, the organization's request for the expertise of one of OMV Petrom's platforms in the Black Sea to verify compliance with safety standards was accepted by the court.
