After the resounding success on Friday night against Senegal, in the main group at the Women’s Handball World Championship in Germany and the Netherlands, Romania is in control of its destiny to achieve the best result at a World Championship in the last 10 years.
Specifically, the team coached by Ovidiu Mihăilă still has one more match to play in this final tournament, on Sunday evening against Switzerland, at 7 p.m., LIVE on SpotMedia.ro, and a victory against the team from the Land of Cantons means 99 percent a more than deserved 9th place for the tricolors.
This was also Romania's objective at this World Championship, a placement in the top 10. And even though a qualification to the quarterfinals was not meant to be, after Hungary defeated us 34-29, Romania aims to finish this competition with their heads held high. The last time Romania finished in the top 10 was back in 2015.
Romania will finish in 3rd place in their group if they defeat Switzerland tomorrow, but, in addition, they must have a better ranking line (points/goal difference in case of equal points) than two of the 3rd place teams in the other main groups.
And the victory against Senegal, 37-17, has helped us greatly in this regard, considering we have a very good goal difference before the last remaining match to be played. With a win against Switzerland, we would reach 6 points and at least a goal difference of +12, depending on the score with which we defeat the Swiss. So, we are in a much better position than our indirect opponents.
Romania was defeated in the last direct match by Switzerland at the Carpathian Trophy in 2024, with a score of 36-27. However, our girls are now strong favorites against Switzerland, with odds of 1.08 for victory, compared to the 12.00 odds for the opponents.
