Romania will advance next year in the World Cup play-off against Turkey on March 26, most likely in Istanbul, and these days a new football player may have appeared on Mircea Lucescu’s radar.
We will face the Ottomans in the play-off semi-final, and if we win, we will play again away on March 31 against the winner of the Slovakia – Kosovo duel.
The president of Petrolul Ploiesti, Claudiu Tudor, made at least an interesting suggestion on Saturday evening after his team's draw away at FCSB, with a score of 1-1. He proposes Gicu Grozav, none other than the striker associated with Romania's last victory in Turkey in 2014, with a score of 1-0. The last chronological victory of Romania against the Turks on November 9, 2017, with a double by Grozav, is also linked to Grozav.
Tudor says that, at least for 20-25 minutes, Grozav could be used in the play-off: "That's what we were discussing this week, for him to score 5-6 goals by March so that Mr. Mircea can take him and throw him in towards the end, to score and make us happy once again. He can play for 20-25 minutes against Turkey without any problems. It depends on him. Let it be a superstition, let's go with Gicu to Turkey and manage to qualify for the play-off final," explained Claudiu Tudor on GSP Live Special.
The last time Grozav was called up to the national team was before the pandemic, in 2019, in a match against Malta in the EURO 2020 qualifiers in September, with a score of 1-0. Back then, the former Dinamo player played 18 minutes.
