An earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.8 was recorded on Friday (local time) in the Pacific, off the coast of the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering a tsunami alert, as announced by the American USGS seismological service.
Friday’s earthquake occurred at 06:58 local time (Thursday, 21:58 Romania time) 128 kilometers east of the Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a shallow depth of only 10 kilometers.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert for possible hazardous waves along the neighboring coasts.
In less than two hours, the earthquake was followed by at least five aftershocks with magnitudes over 5.
Another earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.4, had already struck the region on Saturday, at a depth of 39.5 km, 111 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
