Explosion in a cafe in Madrid: 25 injured

At least 25 people were injured on Saturday, three of them in serious condition, following a gas explosion recorded in a café in Madrid.

The explosion, which occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Manuel Maroto Street in Vallecas, a central-southern district of Madrid, affected the residential building above the premises and a nearby bar, as reported by the Spanish newspaper El Pais.

The blast brought down part of the adjacent portal and one of the walls of the bar, leading initial reports to indicate an explosion in the latter.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known.

Thirteen Civil Protection crews and 17 Madrid firefighters intervened at the scene, along with several units from the community’s Emergency Medical Service.

The police closed the street, redirecting traffic.

Firefighters continue to clear the rubble at the scene.
