Austria defeated Romania 2-1 in the World Cup 2026 qualifiers, the first final tournament with 48 countries, and the first to be held in three countries simultaneously, namely the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
The Austrian press did not hold back with harsh words towards the Romanian national team, which lost the second game in these qualifiers, following that sad 0-1 at home against Bosnia.
The Austrians dominated the match, and Romania scored a consolation goal in the final phase, through Florin Tănase, with a header. The newspaper Der Standard highlighted the superiority of their national team, although they mentioned that it did not play brilliant football.
"Austria's football was not legendary, but the team managed to start the World Cup qualification campaign with a victory.
Ralf Rangnick's team defeated a mediocre Romanian team, 2-1. The victory was never really in jeopardy, as Romania scored in the final phase," the Austrians noted.
