The resignation of Klaus Iohannis from the position of President of Romania has reached Parliament on Monday.

„I, Klaus Werner Iohannis, the President of Romania, resign from the position of President of Romania starting from February 12, 2025. Bucharest, Cotroceni Palace, February 10, 2025,” wrote the head of state in his resignation, according to Antena 3, which presented the document signed by Klaus Iohannis.

Moreover, the Constitutional Court received on Monday the request to ascertain the vacancy of the position and the existence of circumstances justifying the interim in exercising the function of President of Romania, the institution announced.

According to Article 97 of the Constitution, the vacancy of the position of President of Romania occurs in case of resignation, removal from office, definitive inability to exercise the duties, or death.

Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation from the presidency on Monday, after the Parliament's leadership decided to put the suspension request to vote on Tuesday, with high chances of passing.

The President left Cotroceni immediately and announced that he is resigning starting from Wednesday, to spare Romania from the crisis that would have meant a recall referendum and to prevent our country from becoming a laughingstock.

It is a historic moment, as it is the first time a President of Romania resigns.

The rescheduled presidential elections will take place on May 4 and 18, 2025. Until then, the presidential mandate is assumed by the President of the Senate, Ilie Bolojan.

Klaus Werner Iohannis became the President of Romania following the elections on November 2 and 16, 2014. He secured a second term after the elections on November 10 and 24, 2019.
