Over 100 students who have been absent from classes were visited within a week by local police officers from Arad who wanted to find out why they are not going to school.

Representatives of the Arad Local Police said on Friday that, after receiving information from schools regarding truant students, they visited the homes of 109 of them, and this was just in the last week, as reported by Actualități Arad.

Some were not found at home, while others were asleep when the local police knocked on their doors.

The children claim they are unable to wake up in the morning to attend classes, and parents shrug and say they cannot solve this problem.

The visits aimed to warn parents about "the obligation of minor children to attend ten years of education."

"The personnel of the General Directorate of Local Police collaborated with school units in identifying students who, due to social, economic, cultural, or medical conditions, are at risk of dropping out of school. Most of the visited parents expressed their helplessness in getting their children to wake up in the morning.

Apparently, these families seem not to realize that the 'waking up' will occur after the school relationship ends when there will be multiple consequences on their adult lives, including the likelihood that those young citizens will be forced to work unskilled jobs," stated a press release from the Arad Local Police.

The local police also stated that "the dropout from the education system can only be stopped through collaboration between school, family, and community."

"Parents are notified of the need to take measures to change the situation," said Ralu Cotrău, spokesperson for the Municipality of Arad.

In addition, parents who fail to persuade their children to attend classes risk receiving fines of up to 5,000 lei.
