Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea, 33 years old, currently ranked 24th in the WTA, has announced the name of her new coach with whom she will begin a collaboration.
It is a top name in the world of men’s tennis, a former Roland Garros champion and captain of Spain in the Davis Cup. After qualifying for the round of 16 in Miami, where she will face Daria Kasatkina, ranked 11th in the WTA, Sorana Cîrstea announced that she has a renowned coach.
We are talking about Albert Costa, Spain, 48 years old, champion of the French Open in 2002, and non-playing captain of Spain in the Davis Cup from 2008 to 2011. With him at the helm, the Spaniards were champions twice, in 2009 and 2011, with Rafa Nadal as their lead violin.
Before starting the collaboration with Albert Costa for the Miami tournament, Cîrstea is training with Matt Daly, coach of Dennis Shapovalov (ranked 121st ATP), and Brian Barker.
"It's just a collaboration for this tournament, because I don't have a tennis coach here. Shapovalov's coach is helping me along with Brian. It's a zone collaboration, so to speak. I will have a coach for clay and that is Albert Costa. I will start with Albert Costa immediately after finishing here in Miami," pointed out our athlete from Târgoviște to Fanatik.
The former world No. 21 also had a zone collaboration during the tournaments in Doha, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, when she had Dutchman Peter Wessels as her coach.
Sorana most likely reached the collaboration with Costa through Spaniard Alex Corretja, who was the manager of the Romanian and also a former Roland Garros champion.
On Saturday evening, Cîrstea clearly won the match against Sloane Stephens, 6-2, 6-1, at the Miami Open 2024.
