Simona Halep withdraws from Australian tournaments for medical reasons

Double Grand Slam champion Simona Halep is once again facing medical issues, which make her unavailable for the start of the 2025 season on the WTA circuit.

Halep had received two wild cards from the organizers at the beginning of January. One for the WTA tournament in Auckland, starting on January 6, and then for the Australian Open qualifiers, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.

In a post made on social media on Thursday afternoon, Simona Halep announced that, following training sessions in Abu Dhabi, she does not feel fit to compete in the Antipodes: "Hello everyone! I would like to wish you all wonderful holidays. And to announce a small update regarding my condition. After a few training sessions in Abu Dhabi, unfortunately, I experienced quite significant pain in my knee and hip once again. After a discussion with my team, we have decided to postpone the start of the new season. I would have liked to start the adventure in Australia, and I want to thank the organizers of Auckland and the Australian Open for their support and those wild cards. I'm sorry I can't make it on time. I will rest and hope to participate in my next event in Cluj-Napoca, for the WTA Transylvania Open, when I can compete in front of my own fans," Halep posted on her Instagram account.
