Edi Iordănescu leaves the Romanian national team

Edi Iordănescu (46 years old) will no longer be the coach of the Romanian national team.

The Romanian Football Federation officially announced on Monday the departure of Edi Iordănescu from the Romanian national team.

The coach who led Romania to win the qualifying group for EURO 2024 and the group stage at the final tournament, which took Romania to the round of 16 at the European Championship, will no longer lead the national team.

In an official statement, the FRF announced the separation from Edi Iordănescu, for whom they are now looking for a replacement.

"Edward Iordănescu, whose contract expires at the end of July, will not continue as the coach of the Romanian national team.

Appointed at the beginning of 2022, Edward Iordănescu took over the leadership of the national team at an important moment, bringing a new vision and a modern approach to the team's preparation and management. During his tenure, the national team achieved the following results:

After a campaign in the Nations League in 2022, which represented a preparation stage for the EURO 2024 qualifiers, the FRF decided to continue the collaboration. In the qualifying campaign for the final tournament in Germany, the national team finished in first place, undefeated, with only 5 goals conceded in the 10 matches.

The performances continued at the EURO 2024 final tournament, where, under the guidance of Edward Iordănescu, Romania won the group, surpassing Belgium, Slovakia, and Ukraine. Furthermore, in the first match of the final tournament, the team achieved the most emphatic victory in the history of participation in final tournaments, both World Cup and European, defeating Ukraine 3-0.
