One in three children has a form of emotional disorder due to exposure to social media

One in three children between the ages of 8 and 17 has some form of emotional disorder, such as anxiety or depression, caused by prolonged exposure to social media.

The statistic is compiled by Save the Children based on data provided by psychological therapy services and psycho-emotional support within the organization over the past two years.

The organization's experts draw attention to the recent decrease in the age at which children use social media, indicating that "the age range in which social media usage becomes significant is between 5 and 10 years old."

Depressive states occur because social media induces the idea of comparisons and competition.

In this context, Save the Children is launching a national awareness and education campaign in Romania aimed at children and adolescents, as well as parents and teachers, to combat the harmful effects of excessive social media consumption.

Romanian Kids Spend 6 Hours a Day Online

Statistical data presented by the organization and collected in research conducted by Save the Children show that 48.3% of children spend over 6 hours a day online, on weekends or holidays, with most of this time dedicated to social media.

On social media, young people are exposed to the pressure of constantly comparing themselves to others and seeking approval through likes and comments, which "amplifies feelings of inadequacy and frustration and can lead to significant emotional disorders."

Most children state that their values or interests find confirmation in the content encountered on social media, with 57% of them stating that social media helps them see their flaws.

"Anxiety and depression in children and adolescents are increasingly manifesting in the context of social network use. Anxiety brings intense fears, restlessness, and concentration difficulties, while depression is identified by profound sadness, withdrawal, and loss of interest in activities.

Many children end up in therapy with symptoms such as lack of concentration, social isolation, insomnia, or decreased self-esteem. These conditions affect their daily lives, from academic performance to relationships with those around them, and require specialized intervention to learn to manage emotions healthily," said Mihaela Dinu, clinical psychologist at Save the Children.

National Awareness and Education Campaign

In this context, Save the Children, in collaboration with NEPI Rockcastle, is launching a national awareness and education campaign aimed at children and adolescents, as well as parents and teachers, to combat the harmful effects of excessive social media consumption.

Entitled "Perfect Stories Have No Filters," the campaign includes conferences, interactive activities, and educational resources designed to develop critical thinking and help children manage negative emotions caused by online pressures.

The free conferences "How to Guide Adolescents to Protect Their Online Identity?" will take place in September and October in the cities of Satu Mare, Timişoara, Craiova, Galaţi, and Brăila.

Events dedicated to parents, educators, and professionals working with children will bring together over 1,000 participants and will include discussions with Save the Children psychologists, influencers recognized for their active involvement, professional integrity, and ability to positively influence communities, as well as online security specialists.
