New hospital built with EU money in Bucharest

In Bucharest, a new medical complex will be built, dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and research of tuberculosis.

The funds come from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), and the construction is managed by the Sector 4 City Hall, with the expertise and support of specialists from the „Marius Nasta” Institute of Pneumology.

The new specialized center will operate under the authority of the Institute.

The new hospital will cost approximately 72 million euros and will have a capacity of 115 beds, including 19 intensive care beds, three operating rooms, and research and analysis laboratories.

Romania has the highest TB incidence rate in the EU (four times above the EU average) and a mortality rate 6.5 times higher than the EU average (5.1 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants).

The new medical facility will be built from scratch on the land where used to stand the 130-year-old "Zerlendi" buildings of the "Marius Nasta" Institute of Pneumology, in an advanced state of degradation incompatible with quality medical practice.

In three months, the buildings will be vacated so that the construction of the new hospital can begin in their place. Demolition has already started:

"A necessary moment for patients suffering from tuberculosis or other pulmonary diseases. A necessary moment to provide patients with appropriate pathways, safety conditions, a necessary moment for medical staff to feel appreciated and valued, including through the working conditions in which they carry out their activities. Thanks to all those involved in this project, for Zerlendi to become the first hospital built with European funds, and I hope that in 2 years, we will witness an important moment!" stated Dr. Beatrice Mahler, the manager of the Marius Nasta Institute, as quoted in a press release from Sector 4 City Hall.
