Presidential candidate Crin Antonescu explained how he would respond to possible criticism from American Vice President JD Vance regarding the cancellation of elections in Romania, during a potential visit to the White House.
Faced with a hypothetical scenario in which he would reach the Oval Office and confront criticism from Vance, Antonescu suggested that if the American Vice President insisted on this subject, he could remind him of his own electoral issues in the USA.
Asked on Antena 3 Monday evening how he would respond to American officials if questioned about the cancellation of elections in Romania, Crin Antonescu replied that if he reaches the Oval Office, he will speak with the President.
"It's not a joking matter, but I don't refrain from imagining - when you started mentioning who else is in the office - that I could be in the situation of poor Mr. Zelenski, that he was surrounded by JD Vance and the others. I don't want to be in that situation. If I reach the Oval Office, I will talk to the President," stated Crin Antonescu.
The Coalition candidate for the position of President of Romania added that he could discuss the incidents at the Capitol.
"If I have additional information about this case (the cancellation of elections - ed.), I will certainly discuss it. I am a partner. We can discuss this issue, we can also discuss what happened at the Capitol about 5 years ago. I don't go there, if I go, to make history of some episodes, we do it, because we are partners, but I go to discuss as the legitimate President of Romania, after the elections that took place, which are legitimate, and we talk about our future as partners," said Antonescu.
The candidate added that he understands the strategic partnership with the USA as being based on "construction, trust, innovation" and not on "control, censorship over an event for which the Romanian government, authorities in Romania have provided all necessary public explanations."
Antonescu stated that if elected president, his first foreign visit would be to the United States, where he would go "as the legitimate President of Romania after elections that took place, which are legitimate" to discuss "our future as partners."
