Romania ranks ninth in the European Union for voter turnout in the European elections, in a ranking dominated by Belgium, Luxembourg, and Malta, with Croatia, Lithuania, and Bulgaria at the bottom.
According to data based on provisional results released by the European Parliament on the website results.elections.europa.eu, the top three countries in terms of voter turnout were Belgium (89.82%), Luxembourg (82.29%), and Malta (73%).
Germany (64.78%) ranked fourth in voter turnout, followed by Hungary (59.26%), Cyprus (58.86%), Denmark (58.23%), and Austria (54.10%). Romania ranked ninth in voter turnout, with 52.42% of eligible Romanian voters casting their ballots.
The countries with the lowest voter turnout are Bulgaria (31.80%), Lithuania (28.35%), and Croatia (21.34%).
In Romania, the upward trend in voter turnout from the last European elections has been maintained, although the increase is small compared to the 2019 elections, when 51.2% of Romanians voted.
The largest increases in voter turnout as a percentage of the population occurred in Hungary, from 43.36% to 59.26% (nearly 16 percentage points), Cyprus, from 44.99% to 58.86% (over 13 pp), Slovenia - from 28.89% to 41.36% (over 12 pp), and Slovakia - from 22.74% to 34.38% (over 11 pp).
The largest decreases in voter turnout occurred in Lithuania, from 53.48% to 28.35% (over 25 pp), Greece, from 58.69% to 41.39% (over 17 pp), Spain - from 60.73% to 49.21% (over 11 pp), and Croatia - from 29.85% to 21.34% (over 8 pp).
Across the EU, voter turnout increased compared to the previous European elections from 50.66% to 50.93%, with voter turnout higher than five years ago in 15 countries, including Romania.
