Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s special envoy for investments, stated on Saturday that certain countries will make „titanic efforts” to disrupt the planned summit between American President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, scheduled for August 15 in Alaska.
"Undoubtedly, a number of countries interested in continuing the conflict will make titanic efforts to prevent the planned meeting between President Putin and President Trump," Dmitriev conveyed in a post on Telegram, adding that these efforts will manifest through "provocations and disinformation," as reported by Reuters.
The Russian official did not explicitly name which states would be involved but suggested that some international actors would have an interest in prolonging the conflict in Ukraine.
The Kremlin officially confirmed the summit on August 15 through presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov. He stated that the discussions between Trump and Putin will focus on identifying solutions for a "peaceful, lasting" resolution to the Ukrainian crisis. "It will certainly be a difficult process, but we will actively and energetically engage in it," Ushakov said.
Until then, high-ranking officials from Ukraine, the United States, and Europe are set to meet this weekend in the UK, as announced by Axios, citing three sources familiar with the plans.
The purpose of the discussions is clear: to define a common position in anticipation of a potential peace agreement between Washington and Moscow, an agreement that could reshape the map of eastern Ukraine.
According to sources, Trump is seeking to expedite the mediation of a peace agreement, although the deadline imposed by Russia for a ceasefire - August 8 - passed on Friday without consequences. The Kremlin did not halt hostilities, but the White House did not impose any sanctions in return.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated on Saturday that Ukraine will not make territorial concessions in discussions regarding a peace agreement.
