The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, stated in a public post on Facebook that Russia actively intervened in the November 2024 elections through manipulation, disinformation, and cyber attacks.
He referred to recent official documents from NATO, the European Union, and the British government that confirm these interferences.
"I urge those who still doubt Russia's interference in the November 2024 elections in Romania to read the statements below," the president wrote. He emphasized that these attempts to influence Romania's democratic process "were officially condemned for the first time in statements by NATO and the European Union."
Nicușor Dan warns that "Russia is carrying out cyber aggression, manipulation, and disinformation in European countries, including Romania, including in electoral campaigns."
His message comes as major international institutions increasingly express concerns about Russian interference in European democratic processes.
In the president's opinion, the Romanian state should have acted sooner to prevent these external influences: "The Romanian state must provide new evidence as they discover it, and should have prevented what happened in November 2024."
He also refers to a technical document published by the British government, which reveals operations of the Russian military intelligence service (GRU): "However, if you look at the technical document published by the UK government revealing GRU actions (the fourth link below), you will notice that, even for states recognized for their intelligence activities, proving such interferences is a lengthy process."
Nicușor Dan mentioned several communications published in recent days by international institutions.
