Gynecologist caught taking a bribe of 200 euros for a caesarean section. Hospital director: It was an unfortunate case

A gynecologist from the Giurgiu County Hospital was caught red-handed while receiving a bribe to perform a cesarean section surgery.

The doctor asked for 900 lei (almost 200 euros) – 700 for himself and 200 for other individuals from the Gynecology Department.

“The judicial police officers of the General Anti-Corruption Directorate - Giurgiu County Anti-Corruption Service, under the coordination and delegation of the prosecutor in charge from the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Giurgiu Tribunal, carried out, on Tuesday, 23.04.2024, the red-handed apprehension of a gynecologist from the Giurgiu County Hospital,” announced the General Anti-Corruption Directorate.

The prosecutor ordered the detention of the doctor (a woman) for 24 hours.

The hospital management specifies that so far, no complaints or reports have been lodged against the doctor.

"We strongly condemn any action of conditioning medical services in a public healthcare facility, similar to the institution we represent.

Reporting such practices to the management leads to the immediate notification of the competent authorities.

Up to this moment, no complaint has been filed against the doctor in question at the hospital.

We offer our full cooperation to the authorities for the resolution of the investigation," stated in a press release issued by the Giurgiu County Emergency Hospital.

The hospital's director, Dragoş Chivu, stated that it is "an unfortunate case" that the management does not tolerate.

"The General Anti-Corruption Directorate officials were at the hospital today, I believe a red-handed operation was carried out, so we do not have more details, I also saw on cameras the uniforms of those with 'DGA' written on their backs.

It was an unfortunate case, we do not tolerate such situations, if the person is guilty, they will pay, justice will prevail.

I believe the action was probably taken following a report from a relative or a patient. It concerns the Obstetrics-Gynecology Department where this incident occurred; it is assumed that money was requested or I don't know what other benefits.

The hospital has never tolerated such things, and even if someone is aware of such situations, they should not hesitate to inform the authorities or even the hospital management. There was no report to the hospital management; they directly dealt with the General Anti-Corruption Directorate, which is very good, they organized a red-handed operation. (…) From what I understand, they left with the respective doctor to their headquarters.

Until the investigation is completed, we cannot take any measures or make assumptions. If the respective relatives file a complaint with the hospital management, then we will also initiate a local investigation," stated Dragoş Chivu, to Agerpres.
