Mircea Petre, lawyer for Călin Georgescu, stated that Donald Trump could be called as a witness in his client’s trial. For now, he will contest the measure of judicial control.
The discussion about the possible summons of the American president as a witness arose following statements made by Georgescu regarding the war in Ukraine.
"Returning to the third case, to understand what Mr. President's (Călin Georgescu - ed.) attempt consisted of in the state authorities' opinion, we are talking about a show on Realitatea TV, where he made a statement regarding Romania's involvement in the war between Ukraine and Russia. It was the president's opinion. We want to call Donald Trump as a witness. (...) If this notification reaches the court, the president said that this possibility exists," stated Mircea Petre on Antena3.
The lawyer dismissed the accusations regarding requests for money for the electoral campaign.
"Certainly, the president did not authorize him to do such a thing," the lawyer added, referring to the requests made by Horațiu Potra to a businessman for campaign financing.
"He has never asked for any sum of money (...) From what I know personally about the president, he has not done these things, I cannot speak on behalf of Mr. Potra," the lawyer further added.
Mircea Petre also announced that he will contest the measure of judicial control.
"No hearing has been scheduled, we are at the disposal of the Prosecutor's Office, of the investigative authorities. (...) we are preparing to contest the measure of judicial control... I think it will be tomorrow," specified Mircea Petre.
Călin Georgescu could attend the Saturday rally in Bucharest, as the measure of judicial control does not prohibit him from attending public gatherings.
Călin Georgescu, under judicial control
The High Court Prosecutor's Office announced the initiation of criminal proceedings against Călin Georgescu. He was placed under judicial control by the prosecutors from the General Prosecutor's Office for a period of 60 days. Among the accusations are incitement to actions against the constitutional order, dissemination of false information, continuous false statements regarding the sources of campaign financing, and asset declarations.
Călin Georgescu was taken by the police for questioning on the same day as searches were conducted targeting actions against the constitutional order, public incitement, initiation of an organization with a fascist character, false statements regarding campaign financing sources.
The prosecutors issued a warrant for his arrest, and Georgescu was stopped in traffic and brought to the General Prosecutor's Office, where he entered smiling, on crutches, flanked by gendarmes.
Upon leaving the Prosecutor's Office, Georgescu said that there is no difference between our times and the system and mentality of the 1950s, but he says, "we move forward".
