Viorel, the first lynx from Romania sent to Germany

Ten specimens of lynx from Romania will be transferred to Germany by the end of 2027 for the species’ recovery.

The first male, named Viorel (photo), was recently released in the Thuringian Forest, along with a female born in captivity in Germany.

"In exceptional images, the star from Romania, Viorel - the first lynx transferred to Germany for the genetic recovery of this species.

Within this project, 10 lynx specimens from the hunting grounds managed by the Forestry Directorates of Suceava, Neamţ, Bacău, and Vrancea will be captured and transferred to Germany by 2027, aiming to establish a nucleus in the Thuringian Forest, which will contribute to the genetic recovery of the entire lynx population currently existing in three isolated and very small nuclei," stated representatives of Romsilva.

According to them, Eleodor Olavi Niţescu, the Deputy General Director of Romsilva, and Leonaş Dinu, an engineer within the agency and the Project Manager of "Lynx Thuringia," recently participated in the release of the first lynx captured in Romania on the hunting grounds managed by Romsilva in the Thuringian Forest.
