Iga Swiatek has won the WTA 1000 trophy at Indian Wells after a final in which she dominated her top 10 WTA rival, Maria Sakkari from Greece.
The final was decided in straight sets, with a clear score of 6-4, 6-0, after only 1 hour and 9 minutes of play.
The number 1 seed has thus gained another 1000 points and now extends her lead at the top of the WTA rankings, currently holding 10,715 points, well above the second-placed Aryna Sabalenka, with 8195 points behind.
Their head-to-head record now stands at 3-3. Interestingly, the two played the final here in California two years ago, with Swiatek also emerging victorious, with a 6-4, 6-1 scoreline back then.
Sakkari won three consecutive games to level the first set at 3-3, but from 4-4, the world number 1 found another gear - by the end of the match, she managed to break Sakkari five times.
Sakkari and Swiatek became the third pair of players to meet in multiple finals at Indian Wells, alongside Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport (1998, 2000) and Kim Clijsters and Lindsay Davenport (2003, 2005).
