Not all things are rosy within the Inter Milan team, even though the San Siro side is in 1st place in Serie A and almost qualified for the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
After being eliminated this past weekend in the semifinals of the Italian Super Cup, following a dramatic duel decided on penalties against Bologna, with a score of 1-1 and 2-3 in the shootout.
In recent months, Chivu has outlined a clear starting lineup, but central defender Stefan de Vrij (33 years old) from the Netherlands is missing, as he is not among his favorites.
Having been at Inter since 2018, the Dutchman has amassed 287 matches, with 13 goals and eight assists, but he is no longer part of the current coach's plans, Romanian Cristi Chivu. He is under contract until the summer of 2026 and is considering leaving the Nerazzurri ship as early as this winter, as announced by journalist Nicolo Schira.
He wants to stay in the running to be called up for the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup, and if he does not play regularly, he most likely will not be selected by coach Ronald Koeman. The Netherlands is in Group F, alongside Japan, Tunisia, and play-off winner B (Ukraine - Sweden / Poland - Albania).
With 77 national team caps, de Vrij has won eight trophies, including two Serie A titles (2021, 2024), two Coppa Italia (2022, 2023), and four Italian Super Cups (2018, 2022, 2023, 2024), all with Inter.
