A man was fatally shot by the Police in Germany after opening fire on passersby

A man was fatally shot by police near Stuttgart on Saturday after opening fire on passersby and police officers.

The 44-year-old man reportedly randomly fired at passersby, at the building across from where he was located, and at the street from the top floor of his house in Leonberg, announced the public prosecutor’s office in Stuttgart and the State Criminal Investigation Office of Baden-Wurttemberg (LKA) in a joint statement on Sunday, as reported by dpa.

The attacker also fired at police officers. No one was injured.

The man, identified only as a German citizen, had barricaded himself in an apartment where special forces members gained access.

He allegedly threatened the officers with a firearm. The police then shot the man, who died on the spot.

The officers confiscated the man's weapon, which turned out to be a blank-firing gun.

Police are investigating whether the man used that weapon or another when he opened fire from the building where he was located.

Meanwhile, the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) has launched an investigation into the police's use of firearms.
