The government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban supports initiatives that can contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated, referring to President Donald Trump’s plan to relocate the Palestinian population from the Gaza Strip.
„I don’t know if this plan can be implemented or if the countries in the region will accept it. But we all know that President Trump manages to conclude agreements. We all know that President Trump has fantastic negotiating skills. We understand that he has had contacts with his Jordanian and Egyptian counterparts, so let’s see!” Szijjarto said in an interview with the American channel Fox News.
„Hungary is absolutely interested in solutions that bring peace and stability to the Middle East,” he added.
"This is probably the most complicated issue in the world right now: how to achieve long-term peace in the Middle East. I understand that all proposals are very sensitive; any kind of proposal can generate emotions," continued the Hungarian minister in the same reserved but approving tone towards Trump's intentions, as reported by the MTI and EFE agencies on Thursday.
"What I want to say is that when it comes to President Trump, I wouldn't rule out anything," Peter Szijjarto emphasized, giving the example of the Abraham Accords, agreements through which, also at Trump's initiative during his first term, Israel normalized its relations with several Arab countries, even though at that time, there were not many chances for this endeavor.
"Few in the world believed in the success of those agreements. But in the end, he succeeded. And the Abraham Accords brought a completely new dimension to life in the Middle East," noted the Hungarian minister. Therefore, when Trump has an initiative, "I wouldn't say anything is hopeless," he concluded.
Donald Trump stated that the Gaza Strip will be handed over to the United States once the fighting between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas ends, and the Palestinian population from that enclave will be relocated to other territories.
Hungarian conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned the European Union on Tuesday that difficult months are ahead and they must prepare for the Trump tornado after the new American president disrupted the entire world with the measures taken in the first two weeks after returning to the White House.
