The proposed Minister of Justice, regarding the fact that he defended an accused of pimping: And does he not have the right to a lawyer?

Romulus Marinescu, the proposed Minister of Justice, stated on Monday, after receiving a positive opinion from the joint committees, that as a lawyer he defended a person accused of pimping, emphasizing that everyone has the right to defense and it is excluded for a lawyer who becomes a minister to favor anyone or to have the means to favor any person.

The proposed Minister of Justice, Romulus Marinescu, received a favorable opinion on Monday from the legal committees in Parliament. After the opinion, he explained that he is a legal professional with a 30-year career as a lawyer and has defended many individuals, some of them with public notoriety.

About his defense of controversial businessmen and pimps over time, Marinescu pointed out that in a democracy and a rule of law, every citizen has the right to be defended by a lawyer.

”My professional mission is to defend a citizen, a litigant, who is facing justice. If we desire a justice system of normality, justice should not consist of labels stuck on people's foreheads, but in court decisions of final conviction of individuals, only at that moment can that person be called a criminal or a convicted individual,” he explained.

Regarding the person accused of human trafficking and pimping, the proposed minister responded: ”And doesn't that person have the right to a lawyer? It is excluded for a lawyer who becomes a minister to favor anyone and they do not have the means to favor any person, and this must be categorically excluded.”

”The fact that as a lawyer I have defended not only that individual, but many individuals, with public notoriety, is a professional obligation imposed on me by the law. We live in a rule of law, every person, whether accused of a crime, of assaults (...) each of these individuals is presumed innocent. Regarding that individual, I am not aware of any conviction,” Romulus Marinescu added.
