BMW will build the largest industrial solar power plant in Hungary

The solar plant of the German car manufacturer BMW, under construction in Debrecen, in eastern Hungary, will be the largest in Hungary, as well as the largest owned by a company, stated the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó.

According to him, Hungary will gain a „global leadership position” in the green economy.

The solar park built by BMW Manufacturing Hungary, a photovoltaic system that will cover an area equal to 71 football fields, will be the largest of the company group and also the largest industrial solar plant in Hungary, as reported by Budapest Business Journal.

Szijjártó highlights that Hungary's future leadership position in the green economy is based on two pillars: the electronic transition in transportation and the decarbonization of energy production.

"The trendiest companies in the European auto industry are producing electric engines and cars in Hungary. The largest battery manufacturers are also active here, producing batteries that are essential for electric vehicles," he explained.

According to the official, the cooperation between BMW and the city of Debrecen has made Debrecen one of the most developed cities in Central Europe.

"Debrecen has become one of the most attractive investment centers in Central Europe, and we could just as well say that it has become one of the European hubs of the new global auto industry," he added.

The Minister mentioned that Hungary currently has around 278,000 household solar plants and almost 3,500 industrial solar plants.

"The initial plans envisioned a solar energy capacity for Hungary of 6,000 megawatts by 2030, and we have already reached 6,700 megawatts."
