The leader of USR, Elena Lasconi, stated that if she gets to Cotroceni Palace (Romanian Presidential Palace), she would nominate the president of Bihor County Council, Ilie Bolojan, for the position of prime minister.
When asked if she would agree for USR to sign an agreement with PNL for support in the second round of the presidential elections, she expressed confidence that the liberal president, Nicolae Ciucă, would sign such an agreement. On the other hand, Lasconi argues that Nicolae Ciucă „is much lower in the polls” than her.
„I am open to dialogue with right-wing forces, including PNL, for the good of Romania, because we are in a very bad situation and I believe that in 2025 we will be saying: ‘Welcome back, 2008 or 2007‘. I don’t even know if anyone really wants to govern next year. It will be a very complicated year after this year’s tax increases, after all the price hikes, after the loans made by the Government. It will be a very complicated year,” Lasconi stated, as reported by Digi24.
In exchange for PNL’s support, the two parties would end up governing together. Furthermore, in such a scenario, she would propose the name of the future prime minister.
„The proposal will come from me. (…) We have several options. And in USR, there are competent people, but I have told you that I will be the president who will make decisions that are good for Romania and for Romania’s development.
The person I greatly appreciate and from whom I have learned a lot is Mr. Bolojan. And I believe that the position of prime minister should be held by a capable person with a lot of experience in administration. And I don't know anyone else who has more experience in administration than Mr. Bolojan. (...) Even if Mr. Bolojan were not a member of any party, I would still nominate him," she mentioned.
Elena Lasconi added that Romania needs professionals and emphasized that she would "wholeheartedly" want Ilie Bolojan to be prime minister.
"I am referring here to professionals. It's no longer about 'Let me give you a copy of the diploma I found from the '80s or so of the Baccalaureate'. It doesn't work anymore. After '90, we only had top graduates in the Government. And who do we have now? It can't go on like this," she believes.
