The government is not yet formed, but the austerity plan has begun. What the parties agreed on at Cotroceni

A technical working group will be established on Thursday, May 29, at Cotroceni Palace to develop an urgent plan to reduce public spending.

The decision was made at the end of the first round of informal consultations convened by President Nicușor Dan with the parliamentary parties, in the context of the alarming budget deficit and the formation of a new government.

During the marathon discussions on Wednesday, which lasted over 11 hours, delegations from PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR, and the National Minorities Group – the formations that Nicușor Dan wants in a pro-European Executive – participated.

AUR and SOS Romania declined the invitation, while POT and unaffiliated parliamentarians were present.

The working group will have its first meeting on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. and will work in parallel with the negotiations to shape the new Executive. According to the Presidential Administration, the plan will be assumed by the future Government and will include clear measures to balance the budget.

From the Presidency, Radu Burnete and Dragoș Anastasiu will participate.

At the start of the day, Nicușor Dan stated that he hopes the new Government will be formed in two to three weeks and will include the four pro-Western parties. The Wednesday consultations focused exclusively on the economic situation, without negotiations regarding the functions in the future Executive.
