Vladimir Putin announces a humanitarian ceasefire in Ukraine between May 8 and 11, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
The Kremlin states that all military actions will be suspended and urges Ukraine to do the same.
"During this period, all military actions will cease. Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example," the Kremlin said in a statement quoted by Kyiv Independent.
Victory Day, celebrated on May 9, marks the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Union in what is known as the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945.
It remains an important legal holiday in Russia and certain parts of the former Soviet Union, often with military parades and commemorations of Red Army soldiers.
The Kremlin presented this move as a humanitarian gesture during the commemorations. Ukraine has not responded yet.
The announcement comes as Moscow continues to reject Kiev's request for a complete and unconditional ceasefire as a first step towards a broader peace agreement.
Putin previously declared a "temporary Easter ceasefire", but Ukraine accused Russian forces of nearly 3,000 violations during that period.
