A military drone crashed in a field on Big Island of Brăila.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening. People were frightened when they heard a loud bang.
The drone wreckage was found 8 km from the city of Brăila and 23 km from the Ukrainian border, in the Filipoiu farm area, between Frecăței and the ferry crossing point.
The area where the drone fell has been isolated and is guarded by the Police.
Several locals noticed a drone in the middle of a crater with a diameter of at least 4 meters. They alerted the authorities because it was a large military drone, most likely of Russian manufacture, as reported by the local publication Ziarul Comunitatea. "It was scattered everywhere. Aluminium and broken glass components were visible. It left a nearly two-meter-deep hole," witnesses recounted.
People posted on social media images of a flying object captured on Thursday evening around 8:00 p.m. above the houses in the Grădina Mare area, near the Danube, as reported by debrăila.ro.
No RO-Alert message was issued, as has happened in similar situations when drone fragments reached Romanian territory.
The spokesperson for ISU Brăila, Colonel Ștefan Stoian, confirmed that a drone crashed on Big Island of Brăila. He also stated that no 112 call was received.
At the initiative of ISU, Prefect Iulian Timofei summoned the heads of several local institutions (police, gendarmerie, etc.) to the Brăila Prefecture building.
Tulcea is the only county in Romania where fragments of Russian drones have been discovered so far.
According to the Ministry of National Defense, in Tulcea County, last year, drone remnants were identified in four cases:
- September 5: in the forest strip on the right bank of the Chilia branch, in the Plauru area,
- September 9: in the same area,
- September 13: near the Nufăru locality,
- on the night of December 13-14: in the Grindu area.
