A military master sergeant from the UM 01668 Bucharest was detained for 24 hours and later placed under house arrest, after military prosecutors accused him of circulating counterfeit euro banknotes. The man is being investigated for „circulating counterfeit values on a continuous basis.”
According to the Military Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Timișoara Military Court, the investigation began at the beginning of June 2025, after authorities took notice of the suspicious activity of the military personnel.
"The defendant m.m. D.A.R., a military member of the UM 01668 Bucharest, sells counterfeit banknotes, in the denomination of 50 euros, for the amount of 125 lei/piece (50% of the real value)," prosecutors stated in a press release.
On June 13, the man sold four counterfeit 50 euro banknotes to an authorized collaborator for 500 lei. Expertise carried out by the Dolj County Police - Forensic Service confirmed that the banknotes are not authentic.
On July 4, the suspect engaged in a new transaction: he delivered to the same collaborator eight counterfeit 50 euro banknotes in exchange for 1,000 lei. At that moment, prosecutors intervened and caught him red-handed.
During the search, investigators found on him an additional 22 counterfeit 50 euro banknotes and two 20 euro banknotes.
The military master sergeant was detained for 24 hours and later presented to the judge for rights and freedoms within the Timișoara Military Court, with a proposal for preventive arrest. The court rejected the prosecutors' request and ordered house arrest for a period of 30 days.
