A chain of supermarkets found dozens of kilograms of cocaine under the banana pallets

Dozens of kilograms of cocaine have been found in banana deliveries to four stores of a French supermarket chain, with police trying to determine the intended recipient.

Staff at the Grand Frais branches in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in eastern France were amazed to find between 40 and 50 kg of drugs hidden under banana pallets, reports The Guardian.

The store employees wanted to assure customers that the drugs did not come into contact with the fruits.

Now, detectives are trying to solve the mystery of how the drugs, believed to have originated from Colombia, ended up in the fruit pallets and, more importantly, who they were intended for.

Olivier Caracotch, the prosecutor in Dijon, Burgundy, stated that 10 kg of cocaine were found in the fruit delivery to the Grand Frais store in Beaune. Between 10 and 12 kg were discovered in similar deliveries to three other stores.

A spokesperson for Grand Frais said: "We are closely cooperating with the police to ensure that the investigation proceeds smoothly and that our staff and customers are safe."

The supermarket representatives have declined to provide further information.
