Burduja says that Romania could become the first country on the Black Sea to start offshore wind energy production

Romania has the perspective of becoming the first country on the Black Sea to start offshore wind energy production, says Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja.

According to him, the target is for Romanians to benefit from the energy produced in the Black Sea by 2032, with a minimum installed capacity of 3GW.

At the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA) meeting in New York, Sebastian Burduja discussed Romania's integration into the club of countries producing or planning to produce offshore wind energy.

"We closely collaborate with international partners such as the US Department of State and the European Commission to take the necessary steps for the development of this sector, which is important for our country's energy security and that of the entire region. I emphasized the prospects of Romania becoming the first country on the Black Sea to start offshore wind energy production. Our target, also included in the Energy Strategy we are working on, is for Romanians to benefit from the energy produced in the Black Sea by 2032, with a minimum installed capacity of 3GW," Energy Minister wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

He specified that one of the most important things "in this term" was the adoption of the law for wind energy production in the Black Sea.

"Indeed, we are on the radar of major investors worldwide, considering the World Bank study, which shows that Romania could have a huge potential of up to 76GW in offshore wind farms in the Black Sea," Burduja noted.

The minister also mentioned that by 2025, the Government aims to finalize the study on optimal locations for offshore wind turbines, ensuring both energy efficiency and compliance with environmental protection standards.

"Furthermore, I highlighted our efforts to build modern and flexible networks capable of integrating both wind and nuclear energy. Maintaining balance in the national energy system is a priority, and infrastructure modernization is key to achieving this objective," Burduja added.

According to him, at the meeting, he also talked about launching the first auction for Contracts for Difference, aimed at financing new capacities for renewable energy production. "This is another milestone from the PNRR that we have reached. This year we will finance 1,500 MW, and we will add another 3,500 MW next year," Burduja mentioned.
